Cape Town and surrounding areas

Western Cape, South Africa

South Africa’s Western Cape has full bragging rights as South Africa’s most popular tourist destination, and for good reason. This little piece of land on the southern most tip of Africa is rich in natural beauty and history, with more things to do than anyone could possibly manage in just one visit. There are sights to see, beaches to visit, mountains to climb, forests to explore and if you’re after something a little more adventurous then you could consider bungee jumping off one of the many mountains in the region or going swimming in the ocean with the dangerous, yet graceful sharks that populate the Cape coastline. Whatever you’re after, the Western Cape can deliver.

You can find South African wines in many countries all over the world. The Western Cape towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschoek make up the Western Cape’s wine routes and are the major places where these world famous wines are produced, from the growing of the grapes to the corking of the bottles. Be sure to stop by for a tasting or two, as well as the chance to get in touch with some of South Africa’s rich culture and history.

The city of Cape Town is where it all began for the Western Cape, slowly growing out of this perfectly situated city. Overlooking the city bowl is the majestic Table Mountain, the pride of the people of Cape Town. This world famous mountain is open for exploring, whether you are looking for some fine dining with breathtaking views or getting more in touch with the Western Cape’s beautiful landscape and wildlife, Table Mountain is definitely worth a visit. There are many famous attractions to be found in and around Cape Town. The V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, Cape Point and the multitude of sandy beaches, to mention just a few.

If you go nowhere else in the beautiful and unpredictable country of South Africa then make sure you visit Cape Town and the Western Cape.

The city of Cape Town

Arguably the most perfectly placed city in the world, Cape Town has something to offer every holiday maker. Luxurious hotels and fine dining or bunk beds and happy hours, the diversity of Cape Town will accommodate all your needs and wants. A guided tour in one of the many open top busses is a great way to get your bearing in the city and learn about the history and culture that was instrumental in its development.

The city’s past is filled with stories both good and bad. There are stories of people struggling to get by, of relocations and home invasions, but on the positive side there are stories of communities coming together and people overcoming all odds. All this history is written into the city itself and can be seen in the streets, the buildings and the people of Cape Town. Visiting the museums and places dedicated to preserving the memories of these times is a humbling, yet inspiring experience and should definitely be a stop on your busy Cape Town schedule.

Table Mountain and hiking in Cape Town Constantly overlooking the city bowl is the world renowned Table Mountain. No visit to Cape Town is complete without a trip up this majestic mountain. At the top you’ll find a superb restaurant with gorgeous views in every direction. The memories of the sunsets you’ll see from the top of this mountain will stay with you forever. Another way to explore this beautiful landmark is to hike up the back side of the mountain, enjoy a much deserved rest at the top, and then hike back down the other side into the ever changing botanical gardens of Kirstenbosch, another must see in Cape Town.

Hiking is one of the most popular leisure activities the city has to offer, Table Mountain being just one of the many peaks you can climb. Devil’s peak, Lion’s Head and Constantia Nek are a few of the more popular trails available for exploration.

The V&A Waterfront and Cape Town beaches The V&A Waterfront is another favourite amongst tourists visiting Cape Town. It is here that you can get all your Cape Town and South Africa memorabilia, as well as dine in world class restaurants, stay in exquisite hotels and satisfy any shopping cravings you might have during your stay.

If you find yourself feeling a bit overwhelmed by the Cape Town sheer amount Cape Town has to offer, then a trip to one of the city’s warm, sandy beaches is just what you need. Although, there are so many beaches to choose from you might find yourself being overwhelmed again. There’s no need to despair, the vast amount of beaches in the area mean you’ll be able to find the perfect one to suit your needs.

As if there isn’t enough to do in this city already, if you’re intending to visit during 2010 then be sure to get yourself a ticket to the new Green Point stadium for one of the FIFA World Cup matches. Its guaranteed to be an experience of a lifetime.
